Their story
I-130 and I-485 approved in under two months from acceptance, at the Boston MA field office.
I'm married to my U.S. citizen husband. I entered the U.S. on an F-1 in 2018 and changed to H-1B in 2024, and I'm not from a travel ban or visa pause country. We met in late 2024 and married in March 2026. I lost my H-1B job in February 2026, which added a lot of stress to the timing of everything.
We submitted the I-130, I-485, I-765 and I-131 package on April 22, and it was rejected on April 24 for an incomplete public charge questionnaire. We resubmitted and USCIS generated the receipt on May 13. Biometrics were scheduled May 22 and completed June 12, the interview was scheduled June 24 and held July 7, the I-130 was approved July 8 and the I-485 on July 9, 2026 — within about 40 hours of the interview.
The rejection cost us: my H-1B grace period ended April 27, so the resubmission left me with about 15 days of overstay. Our intent was always to file within the grace period and there was no unauthorized work involved. The officer wasn't too concerned — she just added a note.
Questions the officer asked
- 1.Our attorney came with us. The officer was young and friendly and the interview lasted about 25-30 minutes. She said she had no doubt we were a genuine couple based on the evidence.

- 5.Asked about the roughly 15 days of overstay caused by the April 22 rejection — I explained our intent had always been to file within the H-1B grace period and that there was no unauthorized work; she just added a note
- 6.Went through my I-693 and remarked that my civil surgeon had done a very thorough job detailing everything
- 7.The standard yes/no questions on the I-485
- 8.Finished by asking my husband and me why she should approve my green card
- 9.She did not verbally approve us on the spot.
- 10.My answer to the last question was, in short: family ties — I'm married to a U.S. citizen whose entire life (family, friends, career) is rooted here, this is our home, and a denial would put real strain on our marriage and daily life together. And professional value — a PhD from a U.S. university, work at a global organization in a field of national interest, an entire career and professional network built here; approving this lets me keep contributing to U.S. innovation and the economy instead of starting over elsewhere.

For the I-130:
- About 40 photos together. Tip: photos spanning different places and different sets of people. That kind of variety is hard to fake, so we found it helps show authenticity
- Husband's W-2s, 1040s and pay stubs
- Affidavits of our bona fide relationship from mutual friends and family
- Joint apartment lease plus the renewal
- Joint renter's, car and health insurance
- 401(k) and life insurance with each other as primary beneficiaries
- Joint bank statements
- Group chats and emails with his family
- Trip receipts
- Monthly text screenshots, one from each month, from 2024 to the present (WhatsApp screenshots compiled into a PDF). We text a LOT
For the I-485: all prior visa documents, I-94, W-2s and 1040s, prior employment documents, degree certificates and transcripts. We also submitted the I-864.
I carried a copy of my assets to the interview as well — bank statement, 401(k) and stock account.
Their advice
Check the public charge questionnaire before you mail anything. Ours came back rejected for an incomplete one, and the two-and-a-half week delay pushed me past my H-1B grace period into about 15 days of overstay.
For the photo evidence, variety beats volume: different places, different groups of people. And one text screenshot per month from the start of the relationship builds a timeline nobody can argue with — compile them into a single PDF.
Be ready for "why should I approve your green card?" It was the last question and it is worth having a real answer prepared, covering both your family ties and what you contribute professionally.
