Their story
Six months from filing to approval at the Seattle field office. I was on F-1, not from any banned country, with no overstay and no unauthorized work.
USCIS received our application on January 27, 2026. Biometrics were scheduled February 7 and done February 9. The interview was scheduled April 21 and held May 28. The I-130 was approved June 5, and the I-485 on July 28, 2026.
Since I was checking my case often, I noticed several silent updates before the approval: June 26, July 6, July 10, July 13, July 15, July 24 (twice) and July 27 (twice). Then on July 28 the I-485 was approved.
On July 16 my Congresswoman's office contacted USCIS about my pending I-485 to request additional information. I honestly can't say whether it made a difference — the case was approved 12 days later, but I never got any follow-up from the congressional office. The last I heard from them was that they were still waiting for USCIS to respond.
Questions the officer asked
- 1.Our officer was extremely friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in. He asked for our IDs and passports, and while reviewing the file he noticed that my spouse's move-in date at our current address hadn't been updated in the system, so he corrected it before we even started. From the beginning he repeatedly said he saw no issues with our marriage, and that he had already reviewed all the evidence we uploaded before the interview.
- 2.We started with the I-485 portion. The officer actually thanked me for answering the security questions truthfully.
- 3.He then asked whether I had heard about the new USCIS memo that had recently come out, and explained that because of it he had to ask additional questions:
- 4.Why didn't you complete the immigration process through consular processing in your home country?
- 5.A very similar version of the same question.
- 6.He emphasized that these questions were very important and told me to take my time answering, because my responses would be considered as part of the I-485 decision.
- 7.Then we moved to the I-130 section. He looked through our photo album, asked who a couple of the people in the pictures were, how we met, how our relationship developed, how long we were engaged, and what our future plans were. That was basically the end of it.
- 8.He also explained that because of the new memo cases had slowed down and they couldn't give any estimated timeline — he even said that if our interview had taken place one week earlier, things probably would have been different.

Their advice
Be honest. That is my single biggest piece of advice — the officer actually thanked me for answering the security questions truthfully.
Prepare for the consular processing question. Because of the new memo he had to ask why I hadn't gone through consular processing in my home country, asked it twice in slightly different forms, and told me to take my time because the answer would be weighed in the I-485 decision.
Upload your evidence before the interview. Ours had already been reviewed by the time we sat down, and the officer said the case was well documented.
On the congressional inquiry: mine went in on July 16 and the approval came July 28, but the office never got back to me, so I genuinely can't tell whether it helped or whether the timing was a coincidence.
